Easterize Your Watermelon

I love watermelon and have been getting excited that real watermelon season is just about upon us. We got anxious the other day and bought some mini watermelons from Costco and decided to try this idea I saw on Pinterest that came from this blog: http://beneaththerowantree.blogspot.com/2011/07/playdate-link-party-blog-hop-15-all.html
They made it super cute and incorporated the idea in a full fruit salad, but we were just eating lunch and doing this quickly.
 Slice some watermelon
Use any cookie cutter to make fun watermelon shapes
Since Easter is in a few days, we used bunnies, but you could use anything.
It added an element of fun to our lunch and is something easy they can help with. We will definitely be doing this more considering how easy and fun it is to have little fun watermelon shapes with our meal.

Food Friday: Bunny Bait

I realize that by posting an Easter treat that it sort of feels like I am neglecting St. Patrick's Day. Sorry St. Patrick's day, I will get to you soon.
My girls and I decided to make a yummy treat we saw via Pinterest. The idea actually came from:

I wanted to make something that they could definitely help with.
Here are the instructions from that website with my adjustments/suggestions in parenthesis.

Bunny Bait
1 bag popcorn, popped (I used Homestyle Pop Secret)
6 oz. white chocolate candy coating (I used almond bark. YUM!)
1 bag Easter M&Ms (I used a full bag and I wouldn't add that much next time)
pretzel sticks, broken into small pieces
colorful sprinkles, if desired
Place the popped popcorn in a large bowl with the broken up pretzels and M&Ms. Heat the candy coating in the microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring after each time, until melted and smooth.
Drizzle the candy coating over the popcorn mixture and stir to coat. The pretzels and M&Ms will sink to the bottom, so make sure to get those stirred in and coated with the rest of the popcorn.
Spread out on a large piece of wax paper, top with a few sprinkles (if desired) and let cool. Break into pieces and serve in a large bowl.

My kids were SO proud of their accomplishment. It's too bad I didn't take any pictures of them in their aprons and in the process of making it.  I had them help with the process from start to finish. They looked at the instructions online, we made a grocery list, they helped get the items at the grocery store and helped with the rest of the process.

Sun-Catcher Eggs

With Easter just around the corner I thought I should do a little festive project with the boys.
One of our front windows has eggs strung up on it (super easy and cute, read about it here) and the other window was looking lonely, so I found something that could rememdy that.
The same Family Fun book that we used for the less than perfect water gun painting we did had an idea for sun catchers. You probably have everything you need for at least one of the variations.
To start off, I gave each boy a sheet of wax paper with a basic egg shape drawn on it. I drew the egg just so they would sort of have a guideline to work within. I would highly recommend putting cardboard under their paper. It makes things much easier to move from the table to the ironing board. Our first variation of eggs was with with sequins. I think I got this big bag with lots of shapes in it at Michael's.
Once they were arranged to the boys' liking, I put another wax paper sheet on top and moved them over to the ironing board. Set the iron on low. As long as it is low, you don't really need to cover the wax paper up like I did with a paper towel. Mine caught on the sequins a few times so I covered them and turned the heat up slightly.
Iron for about 5-8 seconds on each part of the egg.
When you are done you might find air bubbles. This is generally okay, but if they are on the edges, the guts of the egg might fall out. Try re-ironing these areas and see if that helps.
Once they cool down you can cut them out and hang them up.
The other version we did was what the book had suggested. I sharpened a bunch or crayons and the kids decorated the wax paper with the shavings.
Follow the same ironing procedure as above.
My recommendation would be to keep the layers or crayon sort of thin so you can still see the color shine though. If your kids are like mine, then they would rather have a big pile of shavings on theirs than have pretty colors shine though.
We did a few others with stickers that only look cool from the front. Other variations you could try would be bits of tissue paper, glitter, or even pressed flowers. And if you don't have wax paper or an iron, you can do the same project with contact paper. Just lay one sheet down sticky side up and place all the items on it. Carefully add another piece of contact paper (sticky sides together) and cut out. Or even one more way is to pre-cut your shape out of contact paper and then peel off the paper, decorate and stick directly to the window!
However you choose to do it, they will look fun in the window, despite being hard to photograph. My kids had a lot of fun with this one and we would have kept going, but I needed to make dinner!

Easter Snack

I know this is barely in time for Easter, but I took my daughters to a birthday party yesterday and they had the cutest Easter treat. So I wanted to share. This picture doesn't show it as cute as it was. It was a rice crispy treat nest, 3 chocolate eggs, and a bird Peep on top of her eggs. Cute.

Silk Tie Egg Dying via Martha Stewart

 (photo via re-nest.com)
I have not done this, but read about it in several places last year. It seemed like such a fun alternative to dying eggs. I'd like to say that we will be doing this this year, but I'll just have to save it in the "we'll do it next year" file. But, in case you missed it around the web last year, I thought I'd share a couple of links with you. The info is all roughly the same, but you might like the pictures better on one or the way they explain how to do it. I guess it all started from Martha Stewart (or more likely one of the dozens of creative geniuses that work for her!)
Our Best Bites (via Alpha Mom)
Your Heart Out
Little Nummies (The pictures for this one wouldn't load for me.)

Who knows, maybe before the weekend is over we'll attack this and I'll have photos to share, but don't hold your breath!

Carrots

I saw this idea done with jelly beans (which was darling) & thought I would change it a bit and use cheese puffs. It turned out so cute & easy to do. My kids enjoyed it & the festivities behind it. While we made it we discussed carrots, Peter Rabbit & Mr. McGregor.
All you need is:
-Clear disposable cake decorating bags
-Green tissue paper
-Green curly ribbon
-Cheese Puffs

A few hours later we sat down together & watched the Beatrix Potter movies we love so much while eating out carrot snacks. It was a fun afternoon.
