Personalized Solar System

I wanted to give my boys a beginner lesson on outer space and the planets. The sun, stars and moon are easy because they can easily see them. So we made our own solar systems to help them to begin to understand. Super easy and they had a lot of fun.

You'll need a few colors of construction paper - try to make sure you have black for the sky, glue, scissors, pins, and crayons. If you child is old enough, have them cut out some rings and circles for the planets. Otherwise, have some pre-cut for your child to choose from.

The first step is to let you child poke holes in the paper. This is best done on a soft surface to the pin can go all the way through the paper. This was actually one of the more fun parts for my son.

Add a sun off to the side and then let your child use their imagination to create their own universe. They can color the planets before or after they are glued down.

Once the glue is dry (unlike my top picture!) hang the picture up in the window. The light will shine through the pinholes, creating an effect that looks like stars in the sky.

Stay tuned, I have another spacey project in a few days.
